Research Studies Project Report (M. Eng.) - Asian Institute of Technology, 2003

Future mobile communication systems have to meet the demands of broadband services. The combination of optical techniques and millimeter-wave techniques at very high frequency, namely Radio-Over-Fiber, is a promising an approach to cost-effective networks. Electro-Absorption and Mach-Zehnder electro-optic modulators are the key components in Radio-Over-Fiber technology. Those external intensity modulators are used for generating millimeter-waves from Control Station. In the research, a comparison of Electro-Absorption and Mach-Zehnder electrooptic modulators is performed and their applicability in radio-over- fiber systems is discussed in order to more deeply understand the performance of these devices. Finally, the use of Electro-Absorption and Mach-Zehnder electro-optic modulators in particular radio-over-fiber application is suggested.
