94 p. A comprehensive analysis of available information is done to design a sustainable upland development approach in Nong Luang Watershed, Amphoe Umphang, Tak Province, Thailand . The study followed a rational planning methodology that starts from analyzing the situation, identification of problem, generation of reasoned possible alternatives solutions and analyzing the adverse con sequences together with its contingent actions of the chosen solution. Available Landsat TM Imagery illustrated the land us e /cover of the area and further analysis was supported with other spatial information like soil erosion hazard, s lope, soil texture and depth and geologic materials. Climatological information (e . g . rainfall) were also included f or GIS manipulation in the suitability assessment for major types of land utilization (i. e rainfed paddy and upland cultivation). Among other alternatives, agroforestry was found to be highly adaptable to the given b]o - physical and socio -economic condition by adopting mixed/intercropping, alley and multiple tree cropping. Moreover, the gap between the present land utilization and the inherent suitability of the l and was identified for rainfed paddy and upland crop cultivation. Socio-economic information on the other hand, is indispensable to analyze the whole system particularly their needs and aspirations that further served as guide in designing the above set of actions. A good insight for better and sustainable upland resource planning was experienced in this study but, the overall success can be obtained through its effective implementation in the future.
