Constant Rate of Strain Consolidation (CRS) tests were conducted to investigate the consolidation characteristics of Bangkok clay with the emphasis on the strain rate effect. A constant rate of strain consolidometer was designed and fabricated with the capability of measuring the initial pore water pressure of the soil. Twenty (20) CRS tests were performed at various strain rates together with eighteen (18) conventional oedometer and three (3) end-of-primary oedometer tests. The results obtained from the CRS consolidation tests were compared with those obtained from oedometer tests. Different methods of determining the preconsolidation pressure were used to check the validity of these determination techniques. The CRS test results agree well with oedometer tests .at low strain rates, i.e.,4x10-6/s, showing similar compression curves and coefficients of consolidation. In addition, the results obtained from both CRS and Oedometer tests indicate that there is a small increase in the preconsolidation pressure with increasing rate of strain. This implies that there is some secondary compression occurred during primary consolidation. This increase in preconsolidation pressure is relatively small over two log cycles of strain rate.
