  <abstract>Described in this thesis is what is probably the first serious attempt to investigate the consolidation characteristics of the deep Bangkok Clays,  which form strata interbedded with aquifers to great depth. A hole was drilled at Nakhon Fathom to a depth of 70 m., and 3 in. diameter undisturbed  samples were used for one-dimensional consolidation tests in the laboratory. It was found that the OCRs ranged between 1.35 and 2.75 probably due to  weathering of. exposed surfaces soon after deposition of the several clay layers. The clays were generally not very compressible, and secondary compression effects were small. However, some relatively soft and compressible clays were found to exist at a depth of about 60 m. It is quite possible  that the results from the effects of deep-well pumping in the area, since piezometer installations at Nakhon Pathom indicated that considerable pore  pressure declines had occurred at some depths. Attempts were made in this \investigation to relate compressibility to the index properties of the clays, with some success. </abstract>
