It was found that, generally, the e-log Ov curve for stiff clay shows a smooth shape and the point of the maximum past pressure is difficult to define. Considerable discrepancies often exist between measured consolidation behavior in the field and that predicted by Terzaghi theory. Soft clay was tested by using Rowe oedometer. The investigation showed that in the normally consolidated range, agreement exists between the rate of pore pressure dissipation and the settlement only for the load increment ratios of 1:0.5 and 1:1 tests. For a small load increment, i.e., 1 t/m2 and 2 t/m2 , it was found that there is a very consistent relationship between the dissipation of excess pore pressure and the development of settlement after ,the consolidation pressure exceeds the critical pressure, and it was also found that the settlement of the soil sample continues after the pore pressure has dissipated completely.
