  <abstract>Finite Element Method is used to predict the settlements and  development of excess pore pressures resulting from the construction of embankments on soft clay deposits. The formulation is based on the  theory of Biot. Theebankments are situated at Nong Ngoo Hao and Pom Prachul sites, close to Bangkok. Except at the sand drain installations at Pom Prachul, plantain conditions are assumed. Performance  at the centre of the sand drain installation is studied by isolating the central sand drain with the application of appropriate boundary conditions. Finite Element Method produces good results in comparison with observed values and other conventional methods. More accuracy can be  obtained if soil parameters are carefully selected to be representative of area.  One interesting observation in the results by the Finite Element  Method is the Mandel-cryer effect. This effect reflects the phenomenon that the excess pore pressure within the field can increase over its initial value for a certain time period after the external load has been  applied.</abstract>
