  <abstract>The primary objective o f this study is to investigate the  perceptions and preferences on cars and their characteristics of  consumers in Thailand. The methodology was in the form of fielding survey questionnaires and conducting personal interviews. The respondents were asked to rate the importance , on a five-point scale, of the twenty three characteristics of cars considered in the study.  Then the respondents were also asked to rate their satisfaction, on five-point scale , of the consumers regarding the characteristics of each o f the forty f our car models considered . These car models were classified according to their capacities as the fallowing: (1) Compact size ( less than 1 , 300 cc) (2 ) Middle small size (1,300- 1,600 cc) ; (3) Middle large size (1 , 6 01-2 ,000 cc) ;and (4 ) Full size (more than  2 ,000 cc). Bangkok was chose n to be the area of the study, and there were a sample of 519 respondents. Two statistical techniques were utilized in this study. Firstly, factor analysis was applied to determine the important car characteristics that influence the consumers'  choice. Secondly, cluster analysis was applied to group car models having similar characteristics. The respondents were classified according to difference in sex, marital status, age, income , and .occupation .</abstract>
