These IJVs usually use four control mechanisms. Three of them (action-control, result-control, and personnel-control) co-exist in a closely-knit environment yet still influence each other in a process assisted by the fourth control mechanism, relationship-control. This combined interaction is integral to a successful IJV. The data suggested that as a condition for success an IJV should have at least one control mechanism at a high level of importance with no control mechanism positioned at a low level of importance.
