Therefore research in the field o f Information Retrieval (IR) in recent years has focused on problem s related to cross language information retrieval (CLIR) issues. This allows the user who makes a query in one language to access relevant Information in other languages, which is m ore beneficial and convenient than using multiple monolingual IR system s. The objective of this re search work was to develop a CLIR fo r the languages of the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS), including: Myanmar, Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese and Lao (Laotian). T he prototype system used multiple dictionaries f or translations, and the Solar API for indexing and retrieval. The precision and usability of the system were evaluated by students from the GM S countries. T he overall result of the precision was found to be approximately 60 % in the Myanmar, Thai, Vietnamese, and Lao languages, but only 30% in the case of the Chinese language. Areas for future improvement of the system are the dictionaries, and the text segmentation f or Chinese Unicode UR - http://203.159.5.9/ait-thesis/detail.php?q=B01290 ER -
