Today, the most advanced machining of free from surfaces is done in 5-axis machining which ยท can reduce the machining time. However, the machine stiffhess, the difficulty in cutter selection and tool orientation still remain problems. This study presents an algorithm to select the cutter size and tool orientation for machining features in surface machining which can be combined with a holonic controller of a 5-axis machine. The milling surface is divided in to three phases, namely, roughing, semi-roughing and finishing by using Unigraphics system to generate tool paths. Mastercam is also investigated but found unsuitable. This algorithm is used to support in process planing of finishing of a parametric bi cubic surface. Machining with the suitable tool diameter and optimal tool angle will improve surface quality and can reduce machining time.
