This project was unde1taken to study the deinkability and papermaking potential of local old newsprint (LONP). The raw materials were collected from a local mill. The experiments were conducted at the same condition for different raw materials. The results indicated that American west-coast old newsprint (AW) or American east-coast old newsprint (AE) was better in deinkability. Deinkability was judged based on the response of the pulps for deinking at different stages of ink removal. The observations indicated that the strength properties were the same for all three samples, although the short fiber share of LONP was higher. Opacity was better for LONP, but LONP suffered from lower brightness. Effective residual ink concentration (ERIC), ash content and pulp impurity was higher for LONP compared with AW and AE. Bleaching has improved brightness for the range examined here. However, the increase was marginal. In addition, the residual ink remained unchanged after bleaching stage. The deinkability factor (DEMw) of LONP was about 40% lower than AW or AE samples as it was determined according to the procedures recommended by PTS (Papiertechnische Stiftung) and INGEDE. Recirculation of white water reduced brightness, but increased the ERIC value. However, recirculation of white water had no effect on other pulp properties of the samples.
