Tanks as sources of irrigation water have long history and have become an important element of agricultural production systems in some region of Asian countries. However, their performance in supplying irrigation water is poor. For That situation, improving traditional thanks by introducing a small reservoir is considered as best alternative. Designing an combined system of a reservoir and tanks is a complex problem, since many criteria and aspects should be concerned to achieve an optimal design. In designing command area and reservoir capacity of a combined system, analysis on the relations among command area, rainy/dry season command area, reservoir capacity and also design criteria is required. In order to analyze the relationship, a model was constructed to simulate water balance (supply-demand) in the tanks and reservoir system. The model was applied to Gondang Irrigation Project, Indonesia. Simulation results were analyzed to find the command area, reservoir capacity and operating rule.
