  <abstract>LANs are becoming strategic elements of computer based work environment. Due to  increases in processing power and storage capacity, today's computers have the ability to  handle high quality multimedia applications. But with the limited operational speeds and  medium access techniques, traditional local area networking technology is inadequate to handle  the resources demanding for such applications. The delay experienced in a traditional LAN has  always being a constraint and had led to a need for higher speed networks. Fast Ethernet is  considered to be one of the emerging technologies in high speed networking environment.  lOOBase-T is a well known Fast Ethernet which is simply an extension of CSMA/CD based  Ethernet technology. The other known Fast Ethernet is I OOBase-VG which uses a different  transmission method known as Demand priority. The advantages over CSMA/CD is it  eliminates collision and provides priority for real time sessions in multimedia. But complete  change over from CSMA/CD based technology in local area networking is considered to be  harmful in the development of a cost effective networking solution for multimedia applications.  In this research we propose a dual medium access Fast Ethernet LAN based on both  CSMA/CD and a Token reservation protocols. This design not only provides fixed and  bounded delay for real time sessions, but also improves the performance of non real time  traffic. The design features a hybrid mode of operation where the medium access techniques  switches in to three different modes, according to the types of traffic available. When there is  no real time sessions the operation mode is known as No request mode. In this mode both  networks are based on CSMA/CD decentralized medium access scheme. When the first real  time session arrives the mode of operation switches in to a mode known as Normal request  mode. With this mode one of the networks operate based on Token reservation protocol with a  centralized medium access scheme, giving necessary bandwidth for real time sessions on  request. When the bandwidth requirement for real time sessions exceeds a defined admission  control policy, the mode of operation switches in to a mode known as High request mode. In  this mode both networks are based on Token reservation centralized medium access scheme.  An admission control policy is defined to control the bandwidth occupied by real time sessions  to ensure better performance for non real time traffic. All these modes of operation are then  evaluated based on a computer simulation</abstract>
