This research proposes a functional shell which follows the framework of Backus' FP sys t ern . An FP sys t ern is founded o n the use of a fixed set of combining forms call e d functional forms a nd a set of definition of function to building n ew function from the existing ones. They u se no variables or substitution rule as in some functional languages. All the functions in a n FP system are only one type , that is they 1nap objects into objects, and always take a single argument. The proposed functional shell is an attempt to make use of the FP system in the application based mainly on relational databases. A set of new functions and functional forms are introduced to increase the expressive power. Some examples are given to express its u sag e. A partial implementation is made to ascertain the feasibility of the proposed shell .
