Structural identification provides valuable insights into the condition of buildings and bridges by utilizing vibration data obtained through sensors to determine dynamic properties such as natural frequency, mode shapes, and damping, which are essential for assessing both old and new structures. Vibration sensors play a crucial role in applications such as damage detection and condition assessment, model updating and validation, maintenance and life cycle management, and long-term monitoring. This research focuses on the development of a non-contact, laser-based vibration sensor designed for ambient measurements over long distances. A comprehensive setup and theoretical framework for the instrument{u2019}s develop ment are presented, alongside laboratory experiments and field applications on buildings to evaluate the sensor{u2019}s performance. Detailed results on sensor calibration, bench marking, and practical applications are provided, with comparisons to an industrial-standard vibra tion sensor, such as the force balance developed by Columbia Research Laboratories, Inc. The findings demonstrate potential of the developed sensor as an effective tool for structural identification and monitoring.
