Eng.) - Asian Institute of Technology, 2012 N2 - Vietnam has been significantly urbanized in recent years. The rapidly increasing of population and expand of urban areas while low investment of drainage infrastructure lead to more flooding occurs which has become in urban areas of Vietnam. The urban are requiring the protective structures which can prevent or mitigate the occurrence of flood with the minimum cost. That is the most survival important of development and urbanization in Vietnam. The Intensity {u2013} Duration {u2013} Frequency (IDF) relationship of heavy rainfall is one of the most important tools utilized by engineers for designing flood alleviation and drainage structures in urban and urban areas. The establishment of such relationship was done as early. However, such relationships have not been constructed in Viet Nam. There is a high need for establishment of the IDF curves in Viet Nam. Based on disaggregation technique and scale invariance properties of rainfall, this study used daily rainfall data taken from Vietnam Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (VNIMH) to developed the IDF curves for seven stations which are located in whole the Red River Delta of Vietnam. The scaling exponents were derived in all the analyzed stations. In the selected test stations, the IDF curves based on scaling method show good result in comparison with IDF curves obtained from short duration rainfall data. The IDF relationships success derived from daily rainfall can be applied in drainage design in the Monsoon areas in Vietnam with return period up to 10 years.
