Staff members at many levels have trouble finding and accessing the brochures they need. Once they have them, it is difficult for them to manage their own copies and to keep them up to date, as new brochures are published continually. Can information systems be used to share such information more efficiently, and can such systems be cost-effective? This thesis project has implemented an image database of marketing brochures at a large telecommunications company in Bangkok and evaluated how staff members then used the information in their work. For the maintainers of the brochure collection, an Oracle database was developed using Oracle Developer2000. A Java servlets linked to this database provides the user interface. Once the users learned and used the system for their work, surveys, and interviews showed that they find the electronic system easier and faster to use than the traditional paper based system. As it is essential to keep such systems up-to-date, the evaluation estimated the labor requirements both for setting up this system initially and for maintaining it on an ongoing basis. The descriptive categories designed for this system must change flexibly as the market evolves. 0aMetadatabases1 aBaker, Thomas H.,eChairperson 0 aVatcharaporn Esichaikul,eExamination Committee1 aDevadason, Francis Jawahar,eExamination Committee 2 aThe International Engineering Public Company Limited,eScholarship Donor2 aAsian Institute of Technology.tThesis ;vno.
