159 leaves : ill.+ 1 online resource This thesis delves into pervasive issues of discrimination against women and sexual violence within the construction workforce, with a specific focus on the experiences of masons in Mawlamyine Township, Myanmar.Through qualitative research involving 49 respondents, including 24 women and 25 men, the study uncovers significant gender disparities and challenges faced by both genders. Key Findings include clear discrimination against women in job allocations, unequal pay, inadequate working conditions, and discriminatory hiring practices. Female masons bear an unfair burden of household chores alongside their working responsibilities, while biased perceptions limit their leadership opportunities and career advancement. Moreover, women in the construction industry endure prevalent sexual harassment, violence, and exploitation, with limited support options available. The thesis offers tailored recommendations for stakeholders to foster inclusive workplace practices and advance gender equality in the construction workforce. By implementing these suggestions, including measures for employers, educational institutions, government bodies, NGOs, advocacy groups, and the community, the study aims to create a more equitable and supportive environment for all workers. This research contributes significantly to gender and development studies in the context of construction sites, emphasizing the importance of gender-sensitive workplace arrangements and offering practical strategies for achieving fairness and equality.
