  <abstract>This research was an attempt to study the effect of five selected variables on the legibility of Thai-character highway signs. The five variables comprised the height Of characters, width of characters, stroke width, character spacing, and line spacing. A dynamic legibility condition was simulated in the laboratory by projecting moving slides of Thai-character highway signs onto a cylindricalshaped screen. Volunteer subjects were tested whilst responding to simulated driving situations. The greatest effective distance at which each moving sign could be recognized by 85 percent of the subjects was taken as the dynamic legibility distance. Analyses of the consolidated data resulted in the most probable relationship between the five variables and the dynamic legibility distance.</abstract>
