The analysis of the effect of shunt reactor on the Switching over-voltage of 500 kV system can be done by the EMTP program which is the famous transient simulation program in the world. The shunt reactor can be reduced the switching over-voltage, but for each transmission line, the characteristics are not the same. So, there are many options to use the shunt reactor such as installed at both-end of transmission line, at the receiving-end of the line and no need shunt reactor. Each case is suitable for each line. The study have been done by modeling the three 500 kV transmission lines which have different line parameter and simulating the switching overvoltage which can be occurred by many cases and different parameters. The study consist of the steady state voltage simulation also. Finally we can summarized the output results that shunt reactor can be reduced switching overvoltage but the steady state voltage is the main factor for shunt reactor sizing. We can selected the suitable shunt reactor sized for each line as the following: The 33 km 500 kV transmission line (short length) need no shunt reactor. The 95 km 500 kV transmission line (medium length) need 62 MVAr shunt reactor at the receiving end substation. The 285 km 500 kV transmission line (long length) need shunt reactor at both ends, totally 249 MVAr or 124.5 MVAr for each end.
