  <abstract>This thesis presents the results of an investigation of the effect of anisotropic consolidation on the shear strength of normally consolidated Bangkok clay. Specimens of Bangkok clay from the depth of 28 ft were tested under consolidated undrained condition with pore pressure measurements, i.e. CIU and CAU tests; specimens from the depth of 23 ft were tested under consolidated-drained condition, i.e. CID and CAD tests. The consolidated-undrained test results show that the Mohr-Coulomb parameters c and 5 were found to be affected by the consolidation condition. A higher value of $ was found for the anisotropically consolidated specimens while c was slightly decreased. The other characteristics of anisotropically consolidated specimens, as compared with the isotropically consolidated specimens were: (1) the peak of the stress-strain curve was reached at a considerably lower strain,(2) the pore pressure parameter A was found to be very much lower, and (3) the ratio of the undrained shear strength Su to the major effective principal stress at consolidation was found to be higher. Similar findings were obtained from the consolidated drained tests. A slightly higher parameter $ was found from undrained tests than that from drained tests, possibly due to the difference in depth of the specimens and also the effect of shear time, because 5 is time-dependent.</abstract>
