  <abstract>The performance of aerobic ponds at different detention times was investigated. Performance under indoor and outdoor conditions were compared. Both studies showed better removals at longer detention times. In the first run, with an influent BOD of 50 mg/1, both laboratory and outdoor ponds were successfully operated at 0.4 day, 0.6 day and 1.2 days detentions. Aerobic conditions were maintained at these detention periods. In the second run, with an influent BOD of 100 mg/1, a detention time of 0.8 day led to anaerobic conditions in the laboratory pond. Aerobic conditions were maintained outdoors at0.8 day, 1.2 days and 2.4 days detentions. Best performance was attained at 2.4 days detention period. Generally, the BOD removal efficiency was higher in outdoor ponds. This was attributed to the more favorable environmental conditions such as greater light intensity and warmer temperature. These factors accelerated algal growth and bacterial metabolism and influenced the operational efficiency.</abstract>
