Nowadays, electricity plays a vital role in the modern world. The possibility of lack of energy sources in a very near future forces power utilities to have strong effort in energy conservation and to make energy use more effective. Besides, with the development of modern technology and industrialization, harmonics introducing equipments are being used more popularly. However, these equipments, especially micro-processor based equipments, which are harmonics sensitive loads, are increasing rapidly also. This study presents one possibility to solve the above situation by applying reactive power compensation capacitors in distribution network. In this study, optimal placement of capacitor in primary distribution network was performed while considering the other power quality constraints such as voltage drop, harmonic distortion and resonance. The distribution network of Lienchieu district, Danang city, Vietnam was chosen as the study case. Two softwares, PSS/ ADEPT and PSCAD, were employed for modeling and simulation of the study case. PSS/ ADEPT was used for solving optimal reactive power compensation with voltage drop constraint while PSCAD was applied for harmonic and resonance analysis. The result proves that this solution is quite applicable, both on technical and economic aspects.
