Harnessing the power of falling water by this means is one way of providing affordable energy for the development of rural areas. This study is concerned on the use of nonconventional hydro equipment which are locally and readily available for small rural electricity applications. The main objective of the study is to investigate the electrical characteristics of a small runoff- the - shelf centrifugal pump used as a turbine . A small conventional type car alternator was coupled to the turbine by means of a V- belt. The experimental results and study obtained in this work showed that it is technically and economically feasible to use centrifugal pump as turbine. In this particular study, it was verified that the efficiency of the turbine remained fairly constant throughout the range of its capacity. It was observed, however, that its efficiency was quite low compared with conventional water turbines. UR - http://203.159.5.9/ait-thesis/detail.php?q=B18997 ER -
