Sc.) - Asian Institute of Technology, 1982 N2 - Poor people living in slum and shanty settlements in the city of Colombo are mainly engaged in the informal sector activities which has become an inseparable part of the urban lite. Almost all the little income they earn is spent on food and it is very difficult for them to afford other essential requirements like health, education facilities, and housing. The solution is to raise their income levels which will affect all other conditions. For this, employment with better incomes has been recommended as a two-level program. firstly, individual enterprise which currently exist as informal sector activities is fostered by providing facilities in credit , skill training , and marketing outlets . Secondly, cooperative enterprise is proposed as a settlement enterprise which the shanty dwellers have to take active roles UR - http://203.159.5.9/ait-thesis/detail.php?q=B21085 ER -
