The palm oil industry, being a fairly new industry in Thailand, has not been the subject of any previous energy study. The study was limited to the normal operation of the cogeneration and electrical system of a palm oil mill plant. An energy audit was conducted and first and second law thermodynamic analysis were made. The results show that the cogeneration system first law efficiency is on average about 28.3% and the second law efficiency is about 9.2%. The heat to power ratio of the system is on average about 12 during off peak periods and 8.1 during on peak periods. The analysjs showed that the low efficiency of the system is due to the large difference between the steam requirement to generate electricity and process steam needs resulting in excessive steam blowout, as well as, low boiler and turbine efficiencies. The boiler first l aw efficiency is on average equal to 52.3% and the turbine efficiency is 50.5%. The results pin-pointed high moisture content in the fuel, high flue gas temperature and too much excess air as the main cause of low boiler efficiency, and steam throttling as the major cause of low turbine efficiency. The heat to power ratio is quite low during on peak periods, i .e. when the KO plant , which is a relatively new addition, is likewise operating, emphasizing the fact that the plant has evolved into a system requiring a large amount of electrical energy compared to thermal energy. Modeling equation for the boiler and turbogenerator were set up . Simulation of the cogeneration system was also attempted The modeling equations and simulation were found to agree fairly well with available test data. Energy conservation measures towards recovering some of the excess steam and improvements in the electrical system to reduce electrical load were analyzed. The results s how that a potential total saving of 944,000 Baht/year which is 20% of total 1986 energy cost of the factory may be achieved. The proposed implementable measures arc: utilization of excess steam to preheat the pressurized boiler feedwater and nonutilization of the generator capacitor when cogenerating electricity.
