This report presents tl1e results of a study on energy consumption and conservation opportunities in M/s Usha Siam Steel Industries Limited. An energy audit, limited to the normal quasi-steady state operation of the major energy producers and users is conducted. First and second law thermodynamic analysis are conducted and energy conservation opportunities estimated. Major losses in Thermax and furnace is found through f1ue gas analysis. Reducing t h e excess air in Thermax from 125 9<> to 25 % Can save about 29 , 500 Baht/annum. Thermax can be operated at its best efficiency by adjusting the heat transfer oil flow rate at 4R,500 kg/ h r a nd its temperature At outlet and inlet of Thermax At 161 .8c and 148 .2c respectively. Preheating the furnace combustion air by recovering heat from its flue gas can save abo11 t 660 , 000 Baht /year. In all otl1er processes, surface heat loss is found to be quite high as no proper insulation is provided on various process tanks. Improving insulating on lend bath and zinc bath, alone can save 350,000 and 250,000 Baht/annum respectively. For chillers and electrical motors , some energy conservation opportunities are identified and suggestions are proposed for their operation and maintenance. An overall saving of 2 million Baht/annum is estimated if all the above suggestions are implemented. Feasibility report of electricity production and cogeneration is prepared. Self generation of electricity for base load management can save 3.36 million Baht/annum by compensating for the electricity power out ages. Cogeneration option would give steam saving of 2.84 million Bah t/annum in addition to the above figures. Sensitivity analysis shows that for electricity production, diesel power plant operating with heavy fuel oil required for critical loads is suitable as it gives net yearly savings of 3 million Baht/annum. For minimum and average base loads, no significant increase in yearly savings is found. Cogeneration option has comparatively more yearly savings ( 9% ) for average has load of the company as compared to the critical 1oad where savings are 5. 8 5 mi11ion Baht/ annum.
