  <abstract>The current practice of PMF Estimation in the storm rainfall prone Ubol Ratana  Reservoir is by Rational formula and Unit Hydrograph approach. The storm rainfall and their  distribution is not given due attention during the previous studies even though the acceptable  conservative values of PMF obtained from them.  In this study, a reliable and authenticated method of estimating PMF is proposed for  the reservoirs in the Northeast Thailand based on the:  1. Careful consideration of storms that cross the catchment area along with orientation  and their period of crossing which is capable of producing a rainfall exceeding 150 mm. As  the emphasis is mainly for the extreme cases of occurrence of storm, a long spell of 50 years  of observation is considered in this study.  2. Basin Averaged Probable Maximum Storm Rainfall depths computation using  modified Hydrometeorological Report No.52 (HMR52 Program). The original program suitable  for United States has been modified and made user interactive, thus enabling the program to  be applicable to Thailand.  3. Transformation of rainfall into runoff using a rainfall runoff model SSARR after  calibrating the model with recent catchment characteristics changes incorporated in it.  Thus, a Rational Procedure for PMF Estimation to a reservoir is proposed using  modified HMR52 and SSARR models. Furthermore, the important parameter, Precipitation  Weighting Factor in the rainfall-runoff model is standardized carefully to compute the inflow  at the reservoir location. Thus a more reliable and conservative PMF is obtained in this study.  Furthermore, the observable difference in PMF estimation can be taken as an implication of  consideration of extreme conditions as well change in the catchment area characteristics. </abstract>
