  <abstract>Soil erosion by water is serious global problem. This p roblem occurs in almost all  of midland and mountain regions of Viet Nam. An insight into soil erosion, sedimentation  mechanisms  and  mitigation  methods  plays  an  imperative  role  for  the  sustainable  land  resources development in the region. This study present s daily sediment yield simulation at  a part of Black river basin in northwestern Vietnam to prediction annual soil loss for Hoa  Binh province using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). The SWAT model was  calibrated and validated in accordance with th e observed daily streamflow and sediment at  selected gauging stations. The model efficiency (NSE) for streamflow and sediment in the  calibration period were 0.96 and 0.61, respectively. In the validation period, the NSE value  for streamflow and sediment we re 0.93 and 0.55, respectively. The results of NSE and the  other criteria indicate of the model were acceptable.  Another result, the amount of soil loss were estimated for the period from 2000 to  2010  at  different  land  uses  in  Hoa  Binh  province,  the  amoun t  of  soil  loss  was  largest  at  Disturbed  Forest  land  use  type.  Total  annual  soil  loss  estimation at  Disturbed  Forest  land  use type from 2000 to 2010 varied from 21,587 tons ha - 1  to 66,479 tons ha - 1 per year. The  smallest annual soil loss estimation at Rocks land use type, it was varied from 21 tons ha - 1 to  151  tons  ha - 1  per  year.  These  results  reflected  natural  conditions  in  the  region.    In  addition,  the  SWAT  model  was  used  to  model  soil  erosion,  identify  soil  erosion  prone  areas  and  predict  erosion  risk  for Hoa  Binh  province  in  year  2010.  However,  a  precise  interpretation  of  the  quantitative  results  may  not  be  appropriate  because  some  physical  processes are not well represented in the SWAT model.</abstract>
