In Thailand, hot mix asphalt (HMA) is the best choice to create the road construction and maintenance. This product requires the high temperatures in the mixing and compaction processes for the acceptable performance properties of HMA, but the effect of using the high temperature in the factories impacts to the energy consumption. In the process of the mixing, an oven will consume lots of energy to heat aggregates and asphalt binder. On the other hand, the carbon dioxide (CO₂) emission is also one of the products from using high temperature in the mixing process. It can separate molecules of ozone (O₃). This effect will decrease the ozone and can create the green house effect. Therefore, the temperature for mixing and compaction processes is an very important factor that involves the energy consumption, the CO₂ emissions emitted and the performance properties of HMA. Questionnaire was meticulously developed and used to interview the authorities of the asphalt plants in order to study the effects of using the high temperature of mixing. Three asphalt plants located in Suphan Buri, Ratchaburi and Bangkok were surveyed in this study. A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the mixing temperature at 170, 150 and 130⁰C in term of energy, emission and properties. These effects can be estimated by using the energy model, the Gas Chromatography apparatus and the properties of asphalt mixtures testing. Based on the results, the mixing temperature has significantly effect on the moisture damage resistance and the resilient modulus at high temperature. Nevertheless, high mixing temperature will consume lots of energy and change the hydrocarbon of asphalt binder to the CO₂ gas. In addition, the temperature reduction in the mixing process can save the energy and CO₂ emissions; although, the properties of the mixtures will be diminished.
