  <abstract>The concept of the neighborhood unit was firstly formulated by Perry in  1929. It has been extensively used to define residential areas and has played an  important role in providing the framework for the setting of residential  environmental standards. However, it is not a panacea. Due to changes in social  structure, the concept has already received a lot of attacks. Therefore, many  planning professionals tried to raise possible alternatives and made a variety of  modifies. Even though the paradigm is not the only model in physical design, and  despite some of its shortcomings, in the area of residential design, it seems that  no alternatives have been found.  Recently, many case studies related to the concept of the neighborhood unit  have been done in various countries. But most of these previous studies usually  selected several "planned" neighborhood units which fully applied the concept  of the neighborhood unit, and excluded the "unplanned" residential areas that  did not use the concept to plan. As a result, the value of the findings from these  researches for the future physical design of a residential area is doubtful. In  order to explore whether the concept of the neighborhood unit can achieve  physical functions and some presumed social functions related to physical design,  this research selected a planned neighborhood unit and an unplanned  neighborhood unit and compared their effectiveness.  Based on a survey questionnaire and some secondary data, this research  applied chi-square test, T test, stepwise regression analysis, and discriminant  analysis methods to explore and compare the physical and social effectiveness of  the neighborhood unit concept in the planned neighborhood unit. It was found  that the concept can only accomplish few physical and social functions. Among  29 evaluation criteria, only were 9 criteria found to be successful, 4 criteria to  be failure, and 16 criteria to be indifferent from the unplanned neighborhood  unit. At the end of the research, a new model for physical design in residential  area was raised which is thought to be suitable for Taiwanese environments and  can achieve physical and social functions. Moreover, the research suggested that  the planners should have the responsibility to monitor the implementation of the  neighborhood unit planning until his/her planning conceptions are implemented. </abstract>
