  <abstract>This study investigates the effects of installing driven-mendrel displacement type sand drains on soft Bangkok clay. These effects were studied on pore water pressure, the lateral subsoil movements, the heave  and horizontal movements of the ground surface. A total no of 25 sand drains, 30 cm in diameter and about 6 m. in length, were installed at a contre to centre spacing of 1.2 m. Before  the installation the test site was equipped with piezometers, inclinometers and wooden stakes. The results indicated high pore pressures and large heave of the ground surface. After the installation the excess pore pressures were found to dissipate rapidly accompanied by a gradual settlement of the heaved ground surface and slow recovery in the subsoil lateral movements.</abstract>
