Since the completion in 1964, deflections of Bhumibol Dam are being measured periodically. The deflections do not fit into a definite shape mainly due to the varying temperature load. Deflections due to water load only are separated and curves of deflection against water level are obtained by means of a regression analysis. A finite element model is selected to represent the behaviour of the arch dam and the deflections due to water load are simulated in the model by identifying the two main material properties, namely the moduli of elasticity of mass concrete and foundation rock, using an appropriate optimization procedure. This mathematical model is then used to determine the deflections and the stresses of the arch dam subjected to seasonal changes of the water level in the reservoir. A generalized methodology for the development of mathematical models for existing concrete dams is also presented.
