Measured values of global solar radiation on a horizontal surface at Chiang Mai and Bangkok has been analysed with the objective of subsequent comparison with the work done by LIU and JORDAN and other workers related to the long term performance of solar collectors. The first part of this study compares various proposed functional forms for the monthly probability ( both density and cumulative ) frequency curves of daily total radiation with those obtained from actual measured data. The standard errors of each of these functiona1 forms have been computed and recommendations made as to which functional form is to be used. The second part of the study analyses the cumulative frequency curves of all the hours of the month at Chiang Mai and the same trend as that at Bangkok was observed, namely that the CFC for each of the twelve months are linear and sufficiently close together to be approximated by a linear curve. The suitability of using a linear functional form was also investigated with respect to a more rigorous functional form proposed by GORDON and ZARMI. The final part of this study had the objective of proposing empirical correlations for the daily utilizability function for horizontal and tilted surfaces, both at Chiang Mai and Bangkok. Due to the absence of measured diffuse radiation data, the radiation mode l proposed by EXELL was used to generate both global and diffuse radiation data. However prior to using the above model, validation was done by comparing the hourly and daily CFC ( over each month both at Chiang Mai and Bangkok ) of horizontal global radiation obtained from EXELL's model with those obtained from actual data. The use of the empirical correlations is illustrated by a worked out example.
