Analysis of the agrotourism sector potential in Bangkok and suburban areas

Agrotourism is an extra income for farmers and native people. However, lack of specialists, researchers and knowledge of local people are the main obstacles in promotion of agrotourism. The objectives of this study were to study regulations and policies of tourism, analyze agrotourism potential be analyzing component of tourism systems which are tourism environment (R), tourism service (S), tourism marketing (M) and external environment (E): and to analyze agrotourism as an non-farm income option. Three locations were selected for the study which includes Flowering and Ornamental Plants, Cruising Bangmod and Klang Latmayon Floating Market. There were 135 respondents ( 45 entrepreneurs and 90 tourists) participated in the survey. There are three main government agencies that support tourism a'nd agrotourism .. Firstly, Office of Tourism Department, and Tourism Authority of Thailand are included in Ministry of Tourism and Sport. These agencies have supported tourism by developing standard of tourism, promoting and giving knowledge. Secondly, Department of Local Administration, under Ministry of Interior, increases knowledge of local people and entrepreneur by training and promoting facilities of tourism in study areas. Lastly, main supporter is Thailand Research Fund, which funds researches in these topics well. In addition, the study areas are supported by other agencies such as Ministry of Agricultural and Cooperatives, Local Province Agricultural Extension and private sectors. There are 100 scores of the questionnaires. Klong Latmayom Floating Market has the most potential for agrotourism development indicated by 66.45 scores. Flowering and Ornamental plants and Cruising Bangmod got following scores 63.2 and 60.12, respectively. The numbers of actual visitors vf three study areas were more than break - even visitors. The number of actual visitors of Flowering and Ornamental Plants, Cruising Bangmod and Klong Latmayom Floating Market were 9,000, 5,400 and 10,800 people per year while breakeven visitors were 4,435.71, 4,634.15 and 2,540.01 people per year, respectively. Moreover, the result from estimated non - farm income of three study areas showed that agrotourism would generate non - farm income as 103,571.43, 37,500 and 160,869.57 Baht per year, respectively.
