  <abstract>This study investigates the impact of an alternative  automobile strategy (car restriction and public transport  provision) on the demand for energy in the road passenger  transport. Using a simple transport model , the energy demand in  a low car growth scenario was determined and compared with the  base case normal growth scenario. The results were then used as  input to the input-output model in the determination of  macroeconomic and energy impacts.  Results show that a substantial reduction in energy use is  achievable even with a moderate degree of implementation of such  a policy. The macro impacts are, however, not significant owing  to the low domestic content of automobiles assembled in the  Philippines. Most affected are the Motor Vehicles and Petroleum  sectors which registered large decreases in output. An important  implication of this is that, for oil importing developing  countries such as the Philippines, this policy will lead to  savings in much needed foreign currency.</abstract>
