This study is intended to study ground movements associated with 11-km water transmission tunnel in Bangkok subsoils. It focuses on G-BC-B5 project of Bangkok Metropolitan Wate1works Authority. This monitoring results on both the tunnel and shaft have been analyzed and evaluated. The studies were concerned with relating defo1mations under undrained condition, i.e. immediate settlement. The obse1ved maximum surface settlements around 12 mm occurred at the shield face passing about 90 m away from Instrumented sections. The settlement profiles extended both sides of 14-19 m from centre line. The volume of settlement troughs varied between 1.68-2.32% which agree well with the repo1ted ground loss range of EPB shield. Predictions of ground movements caused by tunnelling in stiff Bangkok clay were proceeded. Both Empirical and Numerical method, PLAXIS program, were unde1taken to investigate the ground movement and compared with the obse1ved values. For SCHMIDT(1969) 's method and O'REILLY and NEW(1982)'s method, the predicted "i" agree well with the obse1ved values. While, the GLOSSOP's design curve(1987) and NORGROVE(1978) yield comparable volume loss value to the obse1ved value. By using the PLAXIS program, the prediction yield the less value of maximum surface settlements and larger width of settlement trough when compared to the obse1ved values. However, the characteristic of subsurface ground movement agree well between the predicted and obse1ved values. For G-BC-5C project, shield tunnelling in stiff Bangkok clay has proven its success without any problems. Shaft construction using open caisson sinking technique may caused undesirable ground movement if it was not operated with usual step of construction.
