One of the problems with highway bridges is the expansion joints. The conventional expansion joints cannot provide a smooth surface as a result there is driving discomfort, pavement damage, bridge vibration, etc. A new type of expansion joint on which a continuous surface pavement can be laid was proposed. New expansion joints, which are polypropylene grid reinforced asphalt blocks, were experimentally investigated. As the mechanical properties of asphaltic concrete are temperature dependent, it sis difficult and troublesome to conduct the laboratory tests. Consequently, the experimental results are largely scattered. In this thesis, an attempt is made to minimize the need to conduct laboratory tests. The components are studied using the finite element method and a model is proposed and analyzed. With the use of laboratory test results from Japan, the parameters involved in the model are estimated. Then the bending characteristics of the polypropylene grid reinforced asphalt block is investigated. Stress-strain curves and load-deflection curves are estimated for the reinforced asphalt blocks at various temperatures. An analysis concerned with a construction technique in which the prefabricated reinforced asphalt block is used is also conducted. The results from the analysis show that the static characteristics of polypropylene grid reinforced asphalt blocks are well simulated using the finite element method in which plastic material with the Drucker-Prager yield criterion is used to constitute the asphalt element model. It is also revealed that in order to improve the bending resistance of the asphalt block, it is most effective to put the reinforcement close to the tension surface. Furthermore, an appropriate setting up method of prefabricated reinforced asphalt block at the joint portion of the bridge is found
