The flow routing process in an open channel is studied and an analytical model for flow routing in a network of open channels is developed, based on the analytical solutions of de Saint Venant equations for one dimensional unsteady flow. The ultimate model for a network is derived through a systematic study of the cases of (i) propagation of wave from upstream end, (ii) propagation of wave from downstream end, and (iii) combination of upstream and downstream propagations by means of superposition. Different discretization techniques to deal with any arbitrary shape of boundary hydrographs and the relative merits of the techniques are compared. Also the error involved while discretization, with respect to the stage increment for discretization, is studied. The results obtained in all the stages are compared with the results from the numerical model MIKE 11, and found to have good agreement.
