Antiplane vibration is considered in two independent modes, symmetrical and antisymmetrical about a vertical axis. In each case general solutions for displacement resulting from the action of a shear traction at the surface and at the interface are obtained in a form explicitly showing the contributions from body waves and surface waves. General expressions are also obtained for impedance and compliance functions of torsional oscillations of rigid circular disc footings and antiplane horizontal and rocking vibration of rigid strip footings bonded to the surface and to the interface. In this study the mixed boundary valued problem is avoided by means of a reciprocal theorem. Far field behaviour of the waves resulting from the applied shear traction is rigorously investigated and shear wave and Love waves contributing to torsional and antiplane displacements are expressed in a general form. Compliance and amplitude functions for the vibrations of the footings considered are qualitatively investigated for a wide range of frequency of excitation. Impedance functions are presented for torsional and antiplane rocking vibrations in lower frequencies. 0aTorsion free Abelian groups 0aStructural dynamics1 aKarasudhi, Pisidhi, eChairperson0 aPichai Nimityongskul,eExamination Committee1 aUeda, Tamon, eExamination Committee2 aThe Royal Norwegian Government, eScholarship Donor2 aAsian Institute of Technology.tThesis ;vno.
