Grid connected solar PV system may cause power quality problems in distribution system namely power output fluctuation, over and under voltage, harmonic, and frequency variation. In the fact that power output of solar PV depends upon solar radiation characteristic and ambient temperature. For example, in one day, solar radiation is uncertainty so the output voltage is also variation. Moreover, the power electronic applications interface between solar PV and power grid is an other effect which introduced power quality problems into distribution system. Mae Sariang microgrid is a pilot project of PEA which consists of diesel generator, micro hydro generator, and solar PV generator. Previously, 1 MW solar PV generator was installed in this system that caused harmonic and flicker problems. Therefore, It is interesting to study the impact of solar PV penetration on harmonic and flicker problems in MSR microgrid system and how to mitigate those problems.. The prediction trends of harmonic and flicker problems were based on the simulation result of the solar PV penetration from 1 to 10 MW. In addition, the DSTATCOM installation is proposed to compensate the reactive power and voltage variation due to power quality problems. This study describes the simulation results obtained by using PowerFactory software. The simulation results of this analysis propose that the increasing capacity of solar PV generation introduced slightly decline of total harmonic distortion trend. On the other hand, trend of voltage flicker gradually rise. Therefore, the increasing size of solar PV installation in distribution network helps to improve harmonic but doesnt enhance voltage quality problem. Furthermore, after DSTATCOM installation, both harmonic and flicker problems was mitigated.
