In this study the effect of the imperfections due to geometrical errors with respect to the designed shapes is considered for the reduction of load carrying capacity of structures , with emphasis on the structures which have geometrical symmetry under the symmetric loading. Since it is impossible to k now a bout the magnitude and shape of imperfections in advance, a method is proposed to select the mode of imperfection, which could give the worst effect on the carrying capacity compared with the load carrying capacity of the perfect system. The proposed method is essential to trace the load-displacement behaviour of the perfect system including bifurcation paths. The shapes or modes on the bifurcation paths are used as the shapes of imperfections, expecting that one of the shapes on these paths would give the maximum reduction of the carrying capacity of imperfect system when the magnitude of imperfection is given in a normalized form. To verify the proposed method a large variety of different initial shapes are created by using random numbers and numerical computations are carried out on all of them to evaluate the maximum carrying capacity with special attention whether there are cases in which the maximum carrying capacity is lower than that obtained by the proposed method. It is concluded from this numerical simulation that the proposed method ca n detect the shape of initial imperfection which reduces the carrying capacity the most and that the detailed study of perfect structure is necessary to study the response of the imperfect structure and the imperfection mode along the post buckling paths of t he perfect structure could be the worst mode.
