The Manufacturers of animal drawn ploughs have little idea of the shape-draft relationship. The plough bottoms of various shapes which are popular in the region have been tested in dry sandy loam soil conditions in a soil bin, using strain gauge mounted load rings, at typical speed and ploughing depth for animals. A significant variation in the horizontal, vertical and side forces was found. all the plough bottoms showed a common tendency of inverting soil in fairly equal amounts both to right and left. Only a small variation in soil inversion angles was seen. The plough bottom with low (not the lowest) lift angle and difference in radius of curvature as the soil particle moved from point of rest to about-middle of the surface of the mould board, has been proved the best-performing one from the view point of specific draft, inversion angle and plough capacity.
