The influence of three different sizes of aggregates and cement on tensile creep of concrete was investigated. The first series consisting of concretes with 3/8 in. aggregate and 3/16 in. aggregate were loaded at 15% of the ultimate splitting strength at 28 days of the respective concretes. The results were not satisfactory since the load level proved to be too low, hence the second and third series (consisting of sand, cement and 3/8, 3/16 in. aggregate) were loaded at 30% of the ultimate splitting strength of the concrete. The aggregate chosen was limestone which is one of the strongest aggregates used in Thailand. Three series of tests were conducted. In series I and III tensile creep strains and swelling/shrinkage strains were measured up to 90 days at 95 ± 5% R.H. and at 72 ± 3°F. Another series of tests were conducted at 78 ± 5% R.H. and 72 ± 6°F in an airconditioned room and series II was kept in the same manner under two different humidifies environments for 56 days under creep and 90 days for swelling/shrinkage tests. Tensile specific creep (creep per unit stress) was shown to decrease with an increase in aggregate size. Cement paste showed the highest specific creep. Aggregate size influenced shrinkage strains in the same manner as creep strains. The results indicated that tensile creep is affected by aggregate size.
