  <abstract>Interaction of random waves and currents is one of the most important and practical problems  in the field of Coastal Engineering. A new method is presented to describe the one-dimensional  frequency spectral refraction by current and/or topography when random waves propogate into  current region field with varying water depth at an approaching angle. An experimental study in  random waves opposing current has been carried out to verify the present method partially. The  results of the comparison between the predicted and measured values in recommended significant  wave height could be considered accurate. The deviation in the wave surface spectrum especially  in the equilibrium range then is suggested as the result of energy transformation between individual  waves due to the wave-wave interaction.</abstract>
