A number of Dutch cone and vane shear tests was carried out at Nang Ngoo Hao site. The measured cone resistance was correlated with the undrained shear strength, and the compression index of the soft clay. An empirical rule for soil classification from Dutch cone test was made in this study. Rate effects on the Dutch cone and the vane shear tests were studied by carrying out a series of tests on both Nang Ngoo Hao and the AIT Campus sites. Finally, a small hand penetrometer was designed and tested. The results were compared and correlated with the values obtained from the Dutch cone tests.
