JPEG2000 standard is established since 2000. It belong to the new generating of wavelet-based image codecs, such as: EZW (Shapio,1993), SPIHT (Said and Pearlman, 1995) and EBCOT (Taubman, 1996) can compress in efficient manner, especially at high compression ratio. It handles both lossy and lossless compression using the same transform based framework, and borrows heavily on ideas from the embedded block coding with optimized truncation (EBCOT) scheme. The JPEG2000 standard offers a variety of coding modes, which may be used to provide some degree of protection against errors. However, their bitstream are very sensitive to errors. Thus, transmission of these bitstreams over noisy channels is challenging. Recently, many works have focused on protecting these bitstreams from the effects of noisy channel. These works can be classified into two main classes: EEP (Equal Error Protection) and UEP (Unequal Error Protection). While UEP scheme based on the progressive bitstream to protect unequally the importance of the different parts of bitstream, EEP assigns the same amount of protection to every bit regardless of its importance. Since JP2 file is constructed in progressive manner, and do at high compression ratio, channel errors can cause an unrecoverable image. There are numerous channel coding schemes and modulation strategies to obtain the aim of transmission of those images. In this research, we focus on investigation of three coding schemes in term of EEP of JPEG2000 bitstream: convolutional code using soft decision Viterbi decoding, Trellis coded Modulation, and Turbo code using Maximum A Posteriori decoding algorithm. Those coding schemes are employed to transmit JPEG2000 bitstream over A WGN channel and uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channel. In our simulation, behavior of compressed image using three coding schemes is presented in te1m of PSNR value and visible image at the same signal-to-noise ratio for A WGN channel and Rayleigh fading channel. The e1ror resilience property of JPEG2000 codestream is good even when transmission over Rayleigh fading channels at low bit error rate. In our study, turbo coding scheme is the best scheme for protecting image from those noisy channel over two other coding schemes.
