EV-91-28 aA thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Engineering, School of Environment, Resources and Development aThesis (M.Eng.) - Asian Institute of Technology, 1991 aThe laboratory scale anaerobic filters were studied to treat the low strength wastewater (less than 1000 mgCOD/L) at ambient temperature (25-35oc) in tropical country. Baby.milk was used as substrates for microorganism with the expected concentrations of 1000, 500 and 200 mg /L as COD basis. The COD loading rates were 0.5, 0.25 and 0.1 kg/m3.d with HRT of 40 hours. Removal efficiency of 90% to 96% with the effluent COD of 20 mg/L can be achieved from influent COD as low as 200 mgCOD/L. Due to the removal results from accumulation or entrappment of substrates in the reactor, so only treatment ability of influent COD of 1000 and 500 mgCOD/L have been accepted if the actual stabilization and methane conversion are taken into account and consequently, the removal efficiency and percent methane conversion increase when the influent COD concentration increases.
