In order to have relevant and realistic development plans, the planners have not only to continuously improve their knowledge of theories and concepts, but also employ advanced tools of analysis for sound and decision making in the planning process. Generally, the use of information technology has proved effective and efficient in most planning activities. GIS has particularly been useful in creating databases required for spatial planning. It is applied in developed countries as a main tool in the field of urban and regional plans. Some times, The different software packages in GIS analysis have to be supplemented with other means for spatial analysis to achieve specific purpose of planning. In regional planning for example, the identification of appropriate location of facilities such as market, school, and health care centre. is very important. While GIS packages can facilitate computerization of databases required for facility planning, models such as location- allocation models have been found highly useful for the identification of specific location. In this study, the theories and concepts for regional development planning related to the location allocation of facilities were reviewed and used as a basis for planning the location of educational facilities. The main application of computer-aided techniques in this study is related to the LA SDSS; GIS ARC/INFO and ARCview software packages. This study could be regarded as an illustration of objective- oriented computer software application to solve spatial planning problems and in particular to identify the optimal location for service facilities. With the application of these computer-aided tools, the results could be obtained in a reasonably shorter time and are also more precise than all the manual methods. Further, all the information are stored in data files which the managers or the planners can easily update, check list, or further analyse for sound decision- making. As part of the findings of this exercise, the present educational development in the study area was assessed. The problem areas were dete1mined to be Tambon Musi, Pongtalong, Wangkata where facilities were recommended for improvement and establishement. The present and future demand for educational facilities was estimated by using "DEMPROJ" program. There are two existing General Secondary and two Lower Secondary Schools in the area. The requirement for four more general secondary school was estimated based on the demand and supply situation analysis. The optimal location of the additional schools were identified based on the criteria by using LA-SDSS. The evaluation for each location is given by outputs of modelling. Finally the advantages and disadvantages of the tools were examined and recommendations for further study were given. ii Notes: 1- This Research Study was completed as part of the requirements for the SPRING (Asia) Program. SPRING, an acronym for Spatial Planning for Regions in Growing Economies, is an M. Sc. program jointly offered by AIT and the University of Dortmund, Ge1many. Under the SPRING Program, a research Study canying 12 credits must be conceptualized and completed within only one term, i.e. from 1st May to 31st July. Preferably, the topic should be related to the preceding district development workshop. The SPRING program thus differs from other M.Sc. programs at AIT where most students write a thesis which spans at least eight months. 2- Professor V. Kreibich ( University of Dortmund, Germany) attended the final examinations of the SPRING (Asia) students in August 1995.
