The international trend towards deregulation has emphasized the need for effective management of telecommunication organizations. The onset of competition will leave only the most capable among the organizations intact. Continuing changes in the environment requires evaluation of the environment, goals, and strategies. To better appreciate the dynamics of telecommunications, this research study presents the status and trends in the industry, technology- and market-wise. Also, it describes the underlying principles of telecommunications management with stress on the importance of structural analysis and competitive strategy for long-term viability. In particular, emphasis is given on the application of information systems in telecommunications management. Citations of practical examples and the areas of telecommunications management that they cover are described. A case study of the management practices of a cellular mobile network operator holding the market leadership in Thailand is made. To illustrate the applicability of information systems, a conceptual framework is developed, integrating the existing systems with proposed ones. A sample decision-support model dealing with the analysis of the demand for cellular services is presented.
